Compare TV and Internet Rates in Your Area | Allconnect Review

compare tv and internet rates in your area

I’m currently on the hunt for better TV and Internet rates because I feel like my current provider is ripping me off.  What started out as a great deal from U-Verse has turned into rate increases, hidden fees and not-so-great coverage.  My contract is set to expire in February so I’m planning ahead and comparing rates now in an effort to secure a good deal the instant my contract ends.  Let’s compare some TV and Internet rates:

This post is brought to you by Allconnect.  You can learn more about their services by visiting their website Allconnect.com.

How to compare TV and Internet Rates

I honestly had no idea that there were businesses that let you compare TV and Internet rates in your area – sort of like Expedia, but for utilities.  Allconnect not only allows you to compare TV and Internet rates, but you can also compare rates for home phone, natural gas, electricity and home security providers.  It’s an all-in-one rate-checking service that’s free and easy to use!

Why should I use Allconnect.com?

Well, why not?  I guess you could do the work yourself and get individual rates from your local utility providers by visiting their websites or giving them a call but who has time for that?  Especially if you’re moving.  The last thing you probably want to be doing is comparing service provider rates while you’re moving.  Plus, Allconnect guarantees the lowest rates.

The Allconnect website is straight forward, easy to use and easy to navigate.

I’m currently paying $118.46 for the U-verse U300 package.  This includes On-Demand services that I am not really using and could definitely do without to save some money.  Here are some of the rates that Allconnect gave me from Charter and Dish for TV in my area.

If I went with the cheapest option available, I would be saving $88.47 per month through Dish.  If I went with the most expensive option through Charter, I would be saving roughly $18 per month.  The prices say “staring at $____” which means there’s probably fees for HD, additional servers, etc. but they’ve definitely got my attention.
If I decided to go with a bundle of TV and Internet through Charter, I would be able to get it for $115.95 per month instead of the $183 per month I’m currently paying.  That really caught my attention.
Check out this video to learn more about Allconnect:
What can you save per month?  Compare TV and Internet rates for your area at Allconnect.com.  Good luck!

Free Up Space & Protect Irreplaceable Memories on your Smartphone

This article is sponsored by Picture Keeper Connect.  As always, all opinions are my own.

Many of us own cameras of all shapes and sizes, from professional DSLRs to action cameras like GoPros. Although we might pack them up for a vacation or a fun photography session, we don’t often carry them all the time. When it comes to taking pictures day to day, we’re much more likely to use the cameras on our phones. The cameras on our phones are convenient, quick, and better quality than they used to be. In addition to all that, our phones are also well-connected. Straight after taking a photo, you can upload it to Facebook or send it to someone on Snapchat.

Using Your Phone as Your Primary Camera

However, there are some dangers to using your phone as your primary camera. Many of us store hundreds of photos on our phones. But we don’t always remember to back them up. This can lead to disaster if your phone is lost, stolen or it breaks, and you’re unable to recover the data. While some of those photos might be just silly, spur of the moment shots, some will be precious memories. You’re sure to have taken photos of your family, your pets or your amazing vacation. If you want to avoid this happening, you have to take steps to prevent it. Fortunately, it’s easier than it would have been in the past. If a roll of film was lost or destroyed, you would probably have lost your photos forever. However, today it takes just seconds to make sure that won’t happen.

Protecting Precious Memories

If you want to make sure you don’t lose your precious memories forever, you can find ways to protect them. Backing up your smartphone is the best thing you can do to save all your best photos. If you phone is ever stolen or broken, you’ll still have your photos in another location. Think of it as insurance for your photos. You have two main choices if you want to ensure you’re always going to have your photos to look at. One choice is to back up your files onto a physical device, while the other is to use cloud storage. Each option has its pros and cons, so you have to consider them carefully. If you want to be extra safe, you might choose to use both types of storage to be extra certain.

Picture Keeper Connect

Using a physical device for backups, like the Picture Keeper Connect, is the safest option for many. If you use a physical storage device, you can hold all your photos in your hand. They aren’t just stored on a remote server. You don’t have to put a lot of effort into backing up your photos onto a device either. If you use one like the Picture Keeper Connect, you just have to download the accompanying app, and it does all the work for you. You can plug the device straight into your phone, so there’s no need to transfer them to your computer. You can keep your photos completely safe, without having to put them online where they might be vulnerable.

Free Space

Another bonus of backing up your photos is that you can free up space on your smartphone. Many of use are very snap-happy when we have our smartphones in our pockets. It’s so easy to take hundreds of photos in one day – some better than others! Even when your phone has plenty of storage space, it can’t hold everything forever. You might go through and delete some blurry shots, but that only holds things off for a little while. If you need to clear some space on your phone, backing up your files on another device is a great solution. You’ll be able to delete them from your phone once they’re safely stored elsewhere.

There’s no question that smartphones are the preferred device for capturing memories for a lot of people. They’re extremely portable, and most people always have their phone on them. There’s no need to remember to take a camera with you because it’s already on your phone. But it’s not all sunshine and roses.

We all need to be careful if we’re going to rely on our phones to store our precious memories. If your phone goes missing or breaks, you could lose some one-of-a-kind moments that you’ll never get back. You have to think ahead if you want to protect your memories. It will be too late to think about backups after something happens.

Next time you come back from vacation or have a fun day with the family, make sure you back up your photos afterward with the Picture Keeper Connect. If you’re careless with your memories, they could lose them all too easily.

Download the Picture Keeper Mobile App

The Picture Keeper Connect App for iOS and Android provides a simple, easy way to backup the photos on your mobile device. Use the app to backup your mobile photos to a Picture Keeper Connect Drive or wirelessly send them to your computer for safe keeping.

Dear Boss Moms, Earthy Moms, Helicopter Moms and Pinterest Moms: Free Business Grade Security Software from Sophos

“Sophos provided me with compensation in exchange for this sponsored blog post. However, all the opinions expressed here are my own.”

“I’m not a perfect mom.”  There I said it.  I rely heavily on others to help me get through the day.  What I mean by that is I rely on my friends like ‘Bucks (as in Starbucks), Annie (as in Annie’s Organic), and others who truly make life easier for a busy work-at-home mom.

When it comes to my business, I’m a master in the art most days. When it comes to parenting, that’s another story.  I let a few bad words slip now and then (okay, every day).  I feed my kids processed foods (in moderation, of course).  I let my two and five year olds play with the iPad unsupervised.

What?  You don’t?

Many stay-at-home moms excel in their own line of work but fail to understand how to keep their business and entire household safe from hackers, spammers and every other scary internet creeps.

Here are some of the ways to keep yourself, your business and your kids safe online.

Emails & Phishing

Email is a great resource for work-from-home moms, making work quick and convenient.  However, emails can be a major source of risk.  One of the biggest risks is something called “phishing.” Phishing is where criminals try to get hold of sensitive data by pretending to be somebody legitimate. For instance, they pretend to be your bank sending you an email saying your account will be shut down unless you “verify your account.”

But don’t worry; there are precautions that you can take to protect yourself.  Often, phishing emails are designed to deliberately scare you. The idea is to get your account information as quickly as possible before you figure out what’s going on.  But there are tell-tale signs that the phishing email is a scam.  For instance, any email that asks for sensitive account information is unlikely to be legitimate.  This applies even if the wording is particularly clever, such as “verify your account.” Also, make sure to check that the email address and any hyperlinks are valid. Be suspicious of any emails that have no other personal information, or look as if they have been churned out en masse.

Secure Wi-Fi

Weaknesses in your home Wi-Fi can put your business at risk.  Inadequate security doesn’t just mean your neighbors can use your router. It means that anybody passing by can steal your information.

Here’s what to do.  First, change your router’s username and password.  Some routers come with default passwords, making it easy for other people to access and change your settings. Next, set up a new Wi-Fi password that contains both numbers and letters. These are the hardest to guess. Finally, change your security to WPA or WPA2 as this is the only viable encryption technology available today.

Free Online Security…

…That Actually Works

Sophos Home is a free business grade security software that Sophos is making available to individuals and families as their gift to the world to help make the internet as a whole a more secure place.  Whether you’re a work-at-home mom or not, internet security is a great tool to have.

Passwords

Work-from-home moms need to recognize that passwords are not always enough to keep them protected on the internet. While it’s true that passwords are rarely hacked, they are frequently stolen by other methods. For instance, we’ve already discussed the issue of phishing. But people also have their credentials stolen when they are stolen from a company with which they do business. Passwords, therefore, aren’t a failsafe way to protect your sensitive information online.

One of the biggest mistakes that moms make is using the same password for multiple accounts. Given that the average person has to remember 19 passwords, it’s not surprising that they do this. But it means that once one of your accounts is compromised, they all are. You should, therefore, use different passwords for each account you create.

Parental Controls

Work-at-home moms want to keep their kids safe online. But what can they actually do? The first line of defense is to use web filters. These block all websites and content that has been deemed inappropriate for children. Don’t worry, you can still create exceptions if a site gets accidentally blocked. Just cut and paste the URL for the site into the web filter’s exceptions list.

If your child has their own smartphone, you’ll have to disable adult content separately. Both Apple and Android devices have a parental filter setting in their settings panel. Go into the settings panel and turn the parental filter on.

Social Media Safety

Social media used to be about what you had for breakfast or your views on politics. But for many businesswomen, it’s become far more important. Social media is a central pillar of their marketing and customer outreach. But unfortunately, it is also a soft target for hackers.

There is, however, a solution. It’s called “two-factor identification.” Here, when you log into your social media account from a new location, a code is sent to your phone. You can only access your account from the new location if you type in this code. Thus, even if hackers do get hold of your password, they still can’t access your account.

I communicate with a lot of other bloggers and many have recently said that this two-factor identification has saved their Instagram account numerous times.

We May Seem Spoiled Now, But We Have A Right To Want More

It’s a sign of how far humanity has progressed that so many of us are dissatisfied with our internet speed. Go back to 1996, for example, and talk to the people about your frustrations with slow connections.

“So, you’ve got this little rectangle you hold in your hand. You can use it to type messages to people in places you’ve never been. You can watch TV on it. It actually lets you know breaking news stories without you asking. It can order a pizza without you speaking to another person, and it will tell you when a delivery driver is five minutes from your house? You can learn languages as you drive to work?”

“Yes. Yes, I have.”

“And what’s the problem again?”

“Sometimes it takes a while to load live footage of sporting events”.

And yet, of course we do get frustrated because we’re used to this all being at our fingertips. The above imagined conversation makes us look unreasonable, but we’ve seen and lived in the future. And when it’s snatched back from us by poor service we’re liable to feel a little bit bummed out by it. Those people in 1996 would be too. They got annoyed when heavy snow blocked out their satellite signal, so 1976 people would sneer at them. It’s fine.

Image from Wikipedia

We’re more than entitled to expect a certain level of service. We have paid for a certain level, and the developments are there. By the time 2036 comes around, we’ll be stunned by what’s on offer then. But you can bet that we’ll complain if we try to download dinner and it arrives overcooked.

Part of the problem is that we have options available to us on the internet that require a certain strength or speed of connection. Because we all have the internet, we can all access these options, but some of them won’t run well on our devices. They have been designed to run on something with higher specifications. So sometimes we need to update our equipment.

For example, if we have a cable internet service, we are liable to find we have speed problems with some of the more up-to-date services. They are designed for, and come into their own with, fiber broadband. So if you currently have a cable service, it’s worth looking for more information about FiOS internet. You may pay out a little more, but you’ll benefit from the increased speed.

Of course, with technology developing at the speed it is, you might find that the net big thing is just around the corner anyway. You could always wait for that. But if what you want is an upgrade right now, then there are options available. You can always upgrade them again in a year or two when the next big thing is here.

It is easy to feel that we are spoiled, as the person in 1996 would look at us now. But when we know there is more and better out there, it makes sense to not be happy with second best. We’re living in the digital age, it only makes sense to make the most of it.

3 Reasons WiFi Baby Monitors are Trending

Why some parents prefer WiFi Baby Monitors
I have a love/hate relationship with WiFi baby monitors.  I love the convenience of them and how I can use them when visiting relatives or staying at a hotel with WiFi, but I struggle with the whole “streaming to my iPhone” thing.  Sometimes it’s just easier to have a separate parent unit connected to the monitor when I’m at home but for parents who work away from the home, WiFi monitors are the bees-knees.
I’ve done my fair share of baby monitor reviews and they have all have differences that make them unique and better than the last, depending on your needs as a parent.  If you caught my Gynoii baby monitor review and video, you might already be familiar with the brand I’m going to talk about today.  I’ll keep the brand description brief and you can reference my last post for more information.

Gynoii is an innovative baby monitor company that that aims at helping children grow in a safer, healthier environment and helps to make parents’ lives easier.  They are constantly looking for ways to improve their products for their costumers’ needs.  Learn more at www.gynoii.com.

3 Reasons Why WiFi Baby Monitors are Trending

  1. Working parents can monitor their child from work.
  2. Parents can record milestone moments from afar and share them on social media.
  3. Grandparents, friends and other relatives can join in for tummy time, feeding sessions or naptime.

Things to Consider Before Purchasing a WiFI Baby Monitor

  1. Adjustments:  Are you able to move the child’s unit from your phone to get that perfect shot?
  2. Audio-only mode:  As your child gets older, you may not need to see a video steam of their every move.  By enabling audio-only mode, you can help save your phone’s battery a little bit and not be woken up by every flash of light from movement.
  3. Tech support:  Consider the reputation of the company you decide to go with.  Are they quick to help their customers resolve any issues that come up?
  4. Investment:  Baby monitors can be costly.  Is this a product you are going to use for years to come?  Are there multiple ways you can use it?
  5. Safety:  Research the safety of the WiFi baby monitor you’re interested in and whether or not they can be hacked.

Trending: Wallet Phone Cases – The jimmyCase

This post is sponsored by jimmyCase.  All opinions are my own.
Wallet phone cases are everything right now.  They’re popular with moms, cyclists, teens, you name it!  So, what’s all the buzz about?  Do they even work?

My husband has been testing out a wooden wallet phone case from jimmyCASE for a few months now and is absolutely loving it.  When he’s at work, he keeps his credit cards in his regular wallet.  When he’s cycling, he pops some money, his ID and a card into his phone case and sticks it in his jersey pocket.  The elastic has not stretched out and works just like new, even months later.

The jimmyCase Details

The jimmyCase holds up to six cards and cash.  It’s made with a genuine Mahogany core and has a built-in rubber bumper.  The case is designed so that when you lay your phone on the table, screen down, it will keep your phone off of the surface to prevent scratching.
The jimmyCase offers full frame protection and comes in a variety of styles and colors.  I advise you to choose a color combination that doesn’t show dirt as easily.  Keep in mind that lighter colors will show smudges and dirt quicker.

The Smartest Thermometer That All Parents Need – Kinsa Smart Thermometer

When I’m packing for vacation, especially an international vacation, I pack just about everything in the medicine cabinet.  With kids, you never know what you’re going to need and you don’t know what will be available when you travel.  A thermometer is a must-have, but is also a trickier product to take along.  They are fragile and if you have an electronic thermometer, they can run out of batteries.  The Kinsa Smart Thermometer is the perfect option for at home and on-the-go.  Check it out:

Kinsa Smart Thermometer

The Kinsa Smart Thermometer is the world’s first smart thermometer that connects directly to your smart phone and allows you to track your family’s illnesses with their own personal health profiles.  This device is small, lightweight, easy to store, won’t break and never runs out of batteries.
With Kinsa, you can add notes to each user’s profile including medicine records, symptoms and a fever log.  The app is free to download and free to use and can also provide valuable medical advice such as when it’s time to call a doctor.

My Thoughts

The Kinsa thermometer is an absolute must-have.  And for only $24.99, you can’t pass it up.  The app and thermometer are helpful parenting tools and are really great for the entire family.  You can even slip a rectal thermometer cover over it and use it on infants.

My family also loves the bubble popping game that helps pass the time it takes to read a temperature.  It eliminates the unnecessary battle with the kids during the 10 seconds it takes to take their temperature.

Where to Buy Kinsa

Kinsa also offers a Digital Smart Ear Thermometer if you prefer to take temperatures that way.  This option is a bit more expensive but is fully compatible with the app.

Sound+Sleep MINI – Sound Machine Review and Giveaway

Thousands of children and adults rely on some form of sound to fall asleep each night.  Whether it’s the noises from home, a slow moving stream, waves crashing, a fan whirling or just plain white noise, a sound machine like the compact Sound+Sleep MINI can help.

Sound Machines for Babies

It’s important to establish a positive bedtime routine with your little ones at night to help them fall asleep easier.  We try to keep our girls’ bedtime rituals as short and sweet as possible but it’s funny to me how different each of their routines are.  My oldest’s routine consists of a prayer, discussing breakfast options, turning on the night light and setting the cat on her bed.  When she was a baby, she relied on a little toy named Violet the dog that played five minutes of bedtime music.  It was the same music each night and was a very important part of her bedtime routine.
My little one needs her silky blanket tucked in, her sound machine turned on and her pacifier in place.  She prefers her night light off and her door shut, just like me.  We are both light sleepers so little lights and random sounds tend to wake us up.  Her sound machine, however, tends to drown out any obnoxious sounds that happen around her bedtime.
My husband and I learned about the Sleepy Sheep sound machine when Kendall was about a year old.  It fit nicely in her crib and is soft like a stuffed animal, so it’s safe for her to sleep with.  The only problem we have run into is that she would roll over in the middle of the night onto the sheep which would end up waking her up.  Now that she is a little older, we’ve started using the Sound+Sleep MINI sound machine which is hands down the best sound machine I’ve tested.

Adaptive Sound Technology

What sets the Sound+Sleep MINI apart from every other sound machine out there is the Adaptive Sound Technology that listens to the background noise in your environment and adjusts itself to drown it out.
This machine has 12 different sound stories that can be adjusted based on your noise preference.  You can set the timer for 30 or 60 minutes and easily adjust the volume levels to suit your needs.
The Sound+Sleep MINI has two different power options.  It can run off of batteries which is great for on-the-go use, or it can be plugged in for endless daily use.

My Thoughts

As I mentioned above, this sound machine is hands-down the best I’ve tried.  The sound comes through so crisp and sounds so natural.  It’s a great little machine for both adults or children and doesn’t take up much space on your nightstand or dresser.

For those, like me, who are disturbed by little lights on a night, there’s not need to worry with this machine.  The lights turn off after just a few minutes of use while the sound continues to play.  I appreciate this so much.

The price point, in my opinion, is fair for the quality of the product and sound that comes from it.  The sounds are so realistic and I absolutely love the Adaptive Sound Technology feature.

To Buy

This sound machine is available on Amazon (affiliate) for under $80 and comes in black or white.  It currently has dozens of positive reviews from previous customers with an overall average rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars on Amazon.

Tips for Using a Humidifier and Keeping it Clean | PureGuardian 14-Hour Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier Review + Giveaway

A humidifier is an absolute must-have product for any household.  They can help combat the spread of viruses by keeping nasal passages moist, thus trapping pathogens, bacteria and dangerous particles before they enter the airway and lungs. A humid room also helps to reduce chapped lips and dry skin during the winter months.  But what happens when your humidifier becomes dirty and requires cleaning?

How to Keep a Humidifier Clean

  • Use distilled or demineralized water- this water has a much lower mineral content compared to tap water.
  • Change humidifier water often and clean every 3 days- unplug and remove any mineral deposits or film. Clean before and after storage.
  • Keep the area around humidifiers dry- turn humidifier down or reduce frequency if areas around it become damp or wet.
  • Consider replacing old humidifiers- over time humidifiers build up deposits that are difficult to remove and can grow bacteria.

Humidifiers and Allergies

Did you know that humidifiers are not necessarily good for allergies?  They can provide too much moisture in the air which helps to nourish molds and dust mites – two things that a lot of people are allergic to.
I always notice a build-up of black mold in our window sills when using our humidifier too much.  I keep a spray bottle of a bleach and water solution to tackle the mold growth and clean the window sills.

PureGuardian 14-Hour Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier

Designed to be used in nurseries, the PureGuardian 14-Hour Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier was made with safety in mind.  As the title states, this humidifier uses cool mist instead of warm mist which eliminates the fear of burns.  The compact size of this unit makes it a perfect fit for dressers, nightstands or side tables and the fact that it’s super quiet makes it ideal for tiny sleepers.
The PureGuardian humidifier is quick and easy to use.  It features one single on/off button that allows you to control the amount of moisture that goes into the air, along with the nightlight.  We love how quiet it is and the blue nightlight is perfect for my baby’s nursery.  It provides enough light for midnight feedings and diaper changes, but isn’t so bright that it overstimulates us.
The PureGuardian® H910BL 14- Hour Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier has a suggested retail price of $29.99 and can be found online at http://www.guardiantechnologies.com.

Samsung Smartcam HD Plus (SNH-V6414BN) Home Security Cam and Baby Monitor Review

I was given a Samsung Smartcam to facilitate my review.  My opinion is not influenced by compensation and is honest and my own.  Thanks for taking the time to learn more about our sponsors.
Baby monitor technology has evolved over the years thanks to brands like Samsung.  Consumers like you and I have found a need for multi-purpose monitoring systems that are budget-friendly, easy to set-up and that can be controlled wirelessly from anywhere through our smart phones.

I recently got the chance to test out the new Samsung Smartcam HD Plus (SNH-V6414BN) which offers live streaming 1080p full HD video day or night.  It can be used to monitor your baby, monitor your home while you’re away on vacation, as a nanny cam and so much more.  You can easily sync the Smartcam to your iOS or Android device and set-up alerts and notifications which offers huge peace of mind while I’m traveling.  You can even record moments onto your phone or an SD card which can come in handy for numerous reasons (ie. baby’s milestones, burglars, solicitors, etc.)

This Smartcam can be mounted on a wall for easy, out-of-the-way monitoring or placed on a desk or dresser.  It has night vision up to 32 feet, two-way talk and a 130 degrees wide angle view.  The picture is very true to vision like the description states and the size of the monitor is very small.
See below for the full list of features and specs.
  • Quick Setup and Intuitive Operation
  • 1080p Full HD Video Quality
  • Two-Way Talk
  • Advanced Motion & Audio Detection
  • Motion Zone Select
  • Push Notification of Event Detection
  • Night Vision Up to 32 ft.
  • Ultra-Wide 130° Angle Lens
  • microSD card slot for local video storage up to 128GB
  • Free monitoring and alert app for iOS and Android
  • 1/3.0” CMOS Sensor for Enhanced Video

My Experience

I absolutely love the wide angle view on this camera.  Since the Smartcam’s view can’t be rotated or adjusted from my phone it’s important to have the wide angle shot.  There is a tiny delay in movement and sound transmission, less than one second maybe, but that’s to be expected and is just like any other WiFi baby monitor that I’ve used.  The set-up process for this camera was so easy and took about five minutes.  I did turn off my sound notifications, though.  The camera picks up too much sound while the baby is awake and playing around the house and I was getting an alert every two seconds.  This setting can easily be turned on or off in your phone’s setting>notifications section.
You can find the Samsung Smartcam HD Plus at your local Costco or costco.com along with the Samsung website.
