Creating a Happy Homework Space

This article is part of a sponsored collaboration.  As always, all opinions are my own.

Homework is one of our biggest struggles growing up and it doesn’t end when you become a parent.  Even in Kindergarten our children are given endless amounts of homework to help sharpen their young minds.  The work may or may not be tough for them, but getting them to be self-motivated is one of our biggest struggles as a parent.  Creating a happy homework space might just give them a little boost, though.

Personally, when my home office is a mess, my mind is a mess.  If my desk isn’t tidy, I feel overwhelmed and can’t fully focus on my work.  If I don’t have the proper materials needed to do my work, if my workspace is uncomfortable or the lighting isn’t right, things just aren’t going to get done.  I notice the same little things with my kindergartener, as well.

My daughter is given a packet of homework each week and is encouraged to work on it daily.  Most of the time she sits at the dining table while I’m cleaning up dinner and struggles to get anything done with all of the distractions — television, her sister asking to color on her homework, the racket from the dishes, etc.  Needless to say, creating a “happy” homework space was at the top of my to-do list.

Believe it or not, the motivation for creating a child-friendly office space came from a chair.  This chair is special, though.  It’s a desk chair made for kids and is more ergonomically designed for their little bodies.  Along with a comfy chair, I added some cute kid-friendly decor and books to her desk.

This children’s desk chair is anything but your average rolling chair.  It features a fully cushioned back support and many adjustable options for kids.  Not only can you move the chair up and down, you can also slide the seat cushion forward and backwards for a better fit.

  • Ergonomic cushioned back support
  • Thick padded slidable seat depth adjustable to 1.7 inches front and back with locking mechanism
  • Height adjustable from 16.7 to 19.6 inches with silent gas lift cylinder and full 360° swivel
  • Detachable footrest and rounded armrest for added support and comfort
  • Urethane wheels with attachable wheel covers for protection and movement lock
My daughter is on the smaller side for her age, so finding a desk chair that is able to adjust to her size is so nice.  The detachable footrest has been a big help to keep her from moving the chair as she’s working on her homework.
We decided to go with a grey chair since we have a lot of colors in my daughter’s room, but this chair does come in many other colors.  You can view the entire collection of SitRite chairs on Amazon here.

Check out these other fun color options.  I love the green!

Oh…My! London Kidswear — Chic Spring and Easter Looks for Girls & Almond Blossom Photo Ideas

This post is part of a collaboration with Oh…My! Kidswear.  As always, all opinions are my own.
Each Spring I take pictures of my girls in their pretty Easter outfits.  It’s so fun to look back to each season to see how they’ve changed over the years and it’s always such a beautiful time of year in California.  This year we decided to shoot in the blossoming almond orchard at the end of our street.
For this almond blossom spring photoshoot, we went with a very natural look on the girls.  No shoes, almond blossom flower crowns made from faux branches found at the dollar tree and light pink outfits from Oh…My! Kidswear, London.  The bunny Easter banner was found in the dollar spot aisle at Target (my favorite store).

These outfits from Oh…My! Kidswear are so well made.  These will definitely not be play dresses and will only be worn on special occasions because of how beautiful they are.  The details on the back of Charlotte’s top and skirt are my favorite.

Healthy, Happy Kids And How To Keep Them That Way

All parents want their kids to be happy, healthy individuals. One of the main concerns of new parents is how to protect their children and keep them safe and well. Establishing healthy habits from a young age is one of the best ways you can ensure your family’s health and well-being.

Regular Checkups

All children are different. They grow and develop in different ways, and it is important to support this. Regular checkups with your child’s doctor will help monitor each developmental stage and flag up any problems. If anything is a cause for concern, this can be flagged early, and steps can be put in place to assist your child. For example, if your child suffers from hearing loss, he or she may initially display few signs of this. If undetected, hearing loss can lead to problems with language and communication. An Audiologist can test your child’s hearing and rule out any problems. If necessary, they can put steps in place to support your child’s learning and development.

Your doctor can also ensure your child is vaccinated, to prevent serious childhood diseases. As well as medical checks, it is also important that children visit a dentist regularly as soon as their first milk teeth appear. This will get them used to the environment and the procedures. The dentist will prevent tooth decay and identify any oral health issues.

It seems that children have a never ending supply of energy, particularly when bedtime comes around. Many parents make the mistake of believing their children need less sleep because they don’t want to go to bed. However, this is not the case. If introduced to a sleep routine their bodies will adjust and they will sleep for longer. Make sure your child gets enough sleep for their age. There are a few strategies you can put in place to help with bedtimes.

  1. Help your child to wind down at least an hour before they are due to go to bed. This time should be spent relaxing or playing quietly.
  2. Establish a routine and stick to it. For example, if children are bathed before bed, keep to strict timings. Let them know exactly what will happen next.
  3. Reading to you children when they’re in bed, helps them to power down and get ready to go to sleep.
  4. Lights off should occur at the same time each night.
  5. Ensure your child’s sleeping environment is conducive to a good night’s sleep. This includes comfortable bedding and an adequate mattress. Temperature and light are also important factors.

Sleep is essential for your child’s development. Children who get enough sleep each night tend to perform better at school than those who don’t. Sleep is also necessary for learning, development, and to strengthen the immune system and fight off disease.

Teach And Model Healthy Habits

There’s no point in teaching your children healthy habits if you don’t model them yourself. Children learn by example. Establish healthy routines for the whole family and ensure everyone keeps to them.

  1. Insist on regular hand washing, especially before mealtimes. Demonstrate how this should be completed effectively and make it fun.
  2. Help your child to clean their teeth as soon as their milk teeth appear. They will need to be supervised for the first few years until this can be managed alone. Explain to them the importance of healthy teeth and a healthy mouth.
  3. Regular washing and bathing should become part of their routine.

A Healthy Diet

Developing a healthy relationship with food will stand your children in good stead throughout their lives. A balanced and nutritious diet will keep them stay fit and well and help ensure they maintain a healthy weight. Explain the importance of a healthy diet to your children and let them learn about nutrition. It’s fine for them to have treats every once in a while, but make sure they are given in moderation.

Make Exercise Fun

Children and adults exercise if they enjoy the activity. So, make it as fun as possible. Rather than seeing it as a chore, label it as playing. There are lots of ways you can ensure your kids get enough exercise.

  • Set up family activities such as walks, trips to the beach or woods, camping, cycling, etc.
  • Encourage children to spend time out of doors, weather permitting
  • Get them interested in gardening and growing their own fruit and veg
  • Buy toys and games that can be played out of doors
  • Limit screen time
  • Encourage kids to join after-school sports clubs

As much as we’d like to, we can’t wrap our children in bubble wrap.  All we can do is teach them well and encourage healthy habits and ways of living from a young age. These are the strategies that will keep them safe and provide them with the tools they need to navigate adulthood.

Educate The Kids With The History Of Geneva

If you are well overdue a holiday or simply feel the need to take a break from your busy life, in order to relax, reconnect with your family and reassess the focal points of your life and family which you may have not been able to give your all to for a while, then the first step you should take is to think about what sort of holiday you want, what sort of place you want to visit, and whether the culture and lifestyle in that location fits within your budget.

If you have children, a destination which is full of historical interest, cultural backdrops and beautiful scenery may be a good choice for you. While spending quality time with the family, you will be able to visit fascinating landmarks and can also educate yourself and the children on topics and aspects which you have always wanted to learn about but simply have not had the opportunity.

Geneva, in Switzerland, may be a good choice for you if the above is the sort of trip you are thinking of taking. It is the second most populated city in Switzerland, behind Zurich, and has plenty of things to do with the family. If you’re worried about how to get there, then put your worries aside as Geneva has its own airport and you can book a taxi on BookTaxiGeneva so you can get to your accommodation without any fuss or unneeded stress.

One of the first things you may want to do is to visit Lake Geneva. The likelihood is that the children will be fascinated by its natural beauty, and you and your partner can stroll alongside the lake breathing in the fresh air and listening to the subdued babble of fellow tourists. If you are going to stay for the day, you could also take packed lunches or even a picnic – you and the family can then relax by the sides of the lake for hours until the sun begins to come down.

To enable the children to obtain some knowledge and historical information, it may well be worth your time to take a trip to the Patek Philippe Museum. The museum, itself, is a showcase of the history of watches – or even the development and attraction of time if you want to metaphorize it – and, while it is certainly crammed with lots of information, there are also interactive aspects to it which the children can get stuck into and enjoy.

There are plenty of options for accommodation, too, with the grand Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva offering you unparalleled luxury, and then there is also the Hotel N’vY which offers you a modern, trendy and contemporary stay.

Allow you and your family to experience the aspects of Geneva which will appeal to everyone. Do your research, look for the best deals and determine which sort of accommodation will fit the best for you – and the family’s – needs. A trip away will allow you to reconnect and relax.

DIY Valentine’s Craft for Kids – Let Love Grow Succulent Heart Flower Pot

As the class room mom, I try my hardest to come up with unique craft ideas for my daughter’s Kindergarten class.  After browsing around on Pinterest for weeks, I wasn’t able to come up with anything, but the theme “Let Love Grow” was stuck in my head.

For class parties, I ask each parent to donate a minimum of $3 per kid to cover the cost of the edible craft and the art craft.  We typically decorate a cookie or cupcake for the edible craft, which also serves as their food for snack time.  Since we had $30 left over from our last party, we decided not to charge for this year’s Valentine’s party.

Intending on keeping the Valentine’s day craft as cheap as possible, I went down to my local Dollar Tree and found these tiny clay pots, 3/$1.  I also found a large $1 pack of potting soil, glitter foam stickers and hearts on a stick.  My only struggle was finding flowers or succulents in the $1 range.

I remembered that one of my neighbors creates succulent arrangements to sell at local street fairs, so I asked her if she had 27 tiny succulents that I could buy from her in the $1 range.  She absolutely came through with tons of beautiful succulents.

How To

The directions for this “Let Love Grow” succulent heart flower pot craft are pretty easy.  Fill your decorated flower pot with potting soil, place your succulent in the dirt, sprinkle with water, add your heart stick and you’re done!  This is a very simple craft for Kindergarteners that can even be gifted to the parents!

Have fun!  And don’t forget to pin this post!

Perfect Party Tips For Your Little Prince Or Princess

If your child has a birthday coming up, you will no doubt be busy trying to plan them the perfect party! You might have thought that planning a child’s birthday party would be super easy, but you may be surprised at just how difficult it turns out to be! After all, it needs to be within budget and also meet your child’s expectations. Plus, it needs to be fun for all the kids who come!

Need some help planning the perfect party for your price or princess? Here are my top tips!

Set Your Date

Planning the best date for your child’s party is the first hurdle that you will face. These days, families are very busy, and you will have to find a date that works for the majority of children. It also needs to fit in with parent’s busy work schedules! Ideally, you should decide on a date and send out the invites at least four weeks in advance. This way, everyone knows to save the date so that they won’t end up double booked! If you want to hold the party in a venue, you should book this around the same time too. That way, it is yours for the day, and you don’t have to worry about someone else booking it!

Choose The Guests

Do you know who your child wants to invite to their big event? If not, you should ask them. Some schools are now starting to create policies which state that all children in the class should be invited to parties. This prevents anyone from being excluded. You will need to check if this is the case at your child’s school. You will also need to decide whether you want the children’s parents to stay for the whole duration or if they can simply drop their kids off. If the parents are going to stay, you will have to include them in the numbers when you start to plan food.

One of the main expenses for children’s parties is the entertainment. Some parents like to hire clowns and magicians to put on shows for the children, but these can often turn out expensive. If you want to keep your costs down to a minimum, you can always organize some games; these party games are easy and fun to play and will be simple enough for kids of all ages to join in with.

When you are thinking about the food, you need to consider what time of day the party is. For instance, if the party is in the evening, don’t provide too many sweet and sugary options as you may have some parents complain that they couldn’t get their kids to sleep afterwards! Also, it is a good idea to include a healthy option, such as fresh fruit, as not every child will be happy with pizza and hot dogs. Planning a finger buffet will give you the chance to offer a variety of foods.

I hope you and the birthday boy or girl have a great party!

Parents everywhere, rejoice!  There is finally a cheap and easy way to create an indoor (or outdoor) fort for your kids!  As a parent, the fort struggle is constant.  My kids drag sheets and blankets all over my house, sling them over chairs, tables, bar stools and couches, drag their toys to play with underneath – and leave it all for me to clean up!  Not a day goes by that they don’t ask to play under some sort of structure.
Browsing around Pinterest, you’ll find a bazillion options for DIY fort kits for kids, but they all require so much effort.  And money.  And time.  Amazon Prime it is!

Music That You WILL Enjoy With Your Kids

Real talk for a second.  Before having kids I told myself, “I am not going to be that kind of mom that has kid tunes blaring in the car and a trail of toys scattered in MY adult living space.  I’m going to have boundaries and be well organized with a schedule.”   [Lets all just laugh loudly at that very unrealistic picture].   Well, I had my first child and that vision went right out the window.  At that point, whatever worked – is what we did.  The love we have for our children sure does makes us do things we never thought we’d do.  Am I right, or am I right?  Mom life is having a toy reserve in each room, and stale snacks under the couch cushion.  It is that secret stash of candy in your top drawer that has long since expired, but still brings you joy.  Its playing princess and twirling to that one song over and over and over.

For me, the thought of kid tv going and nursery rhymes replaying wasn’t something I was particularly looking forward to.  For instance, my daughter is 4 and when she asks to put Mother Goose Club on, I know that its time for me to find a chore to do, far far away through at least 3 closed doors.  It really is a sweet wholesome show, and for that I am thankful, but the songs dig holes in my head and I’m left reluctantly playing that tune all day.  If only I had a secret wardrobe that led to a spa, which meant a foot massage, that led to a long uninterrupted nap…  Oh wait, that isn’t real life.
I needed to figure something out, because I know how happy it makes me when my husband takes interest in the things that I enjoy.  As a  mom, I know that it makes my daughter happy when we enjoy her world together.  If I was going to truly enjoy her tunes, it meant that I needed to be more intentional in what we listen to together.

Topher Tunes

As a family, we love exploring together, eating different foods and learning about odd things, so finding a palette of music that tasted good to our inner jam had to be different.   My husband and I strive to widen our children’s scope of the world in everything we do, so stumbling upon Topher Tunes was refreshing.  This composer takes your typical nursery rhyme and casts it in a different era, dawning that style of music.  For instance, Little Boy Blue is set in the 1930’s taking on the swing jazz feel of the Big Band Era – my favorite song!
I love that my daughter is unknowingly learning history through the fun veil of music as a toddler.  I hope that when she is studying History text in middle school, it comes easier because she has had all of these fun educational touchpoints as a small child.  I don’t mind cranking these songs up loud in the kitchen as we make some lunch.  She’s happy that I am enjoying her world with her, and I enjoy listening to an old classic remade into something fun and new.

Bedtime Music

We have lots of fun during the day, but as we all know, bedtime is a chore.  It requires routine, which is something that I have to try much harder at than most.  We have recently set a bedtime and a couple of rituals that help my daughter wind down.  First it’s jammies and a good teeth brushing, then its the dreaded sleeping in her own bed, which leads to an hour long cry-fest.  I have recently begun putting her down with low music, which seems to be helping.  All Topher’s music is great for setting the stage of bedtime.  I love knowing that I can engage her mind even at bed time as she drifts off to sleep.  Again, whatever works – right??
This set of tunes is the first album of its kind, and I am already excited for the second musical creation to drop.  If you are curious for yourself, go and preview the album via the link below!  You can purchase a hard copy or download right from the link.
May you enjoy the little things with your littles!

2017 Valentine’s Cards for Kids

This is a sponsored post on behalf of my affiliate partner, Minted.  As always, all opinions are my own.  Post contains affiliate links.
DIY Valentine's Cards

Thinking back to Valentine’s Day celebrations in class when I was a kid, I remember getting loads of cards each year.  But what I remember the most is receiving cards with candy attached to them.  That was the best!

I always try to make my daughter’s school Valentine’s cards extra special with some sort of treat – lollipops, snack size bags of M&Ms, Valentine’s Muddy Buddies, etc., but what I’m not a huge fan of are the generic Valentine’s cards that everyone buys from Target or Walmart.  Sure, they’re cute, but we end up getting 10 of the same cards by the end of the holiday.

Last year we ordered our Valentine’s Day cards from and everyone absolutely loved them.  If you missed last year’s article, check it out here.

This year I decided to use one of my favorite photos of my daughter from our Grand Cayman vacation in November for her school cards.  I originally had the hole-punched card (shown below) in my cart and intended on placing a lollipop through hole, but decided to go with a rectangular scalloped card with hearts, instead.  My daughter loves the rainbow colored hearts, so it was an easy decision for her.

I chose to leave the backs of our cards blank so my daughter can write cute little notes on the back.  She is learning how to read and spell right now and loves to write notes to everyone.

Idea: ‘I Really Dig You’ Valentine’s Day Shovels

Combine the cuteness of Minted’s “I Really Dig You” Valentine’s cards with plastic shovels from Amazon, Dollar Tree or a party supply store and the candy of your choice for a unique V-day treat.  Wrap it all with cellophane, tie a ribbon on it and you’ve got the perfect gift. Kid’s Valentine’s Cards I Love

Minted has some of the cutest Valentine’s cards that I’ve ever seen.  Their cards are fully customizable and are very easy to personalize.  The average price for 25 cards is $20 and from there you can add extras like print on the back, upgraded paper, and more.
If you’re looking for upgraded Valentine’s cards this year, I recommend you browse the giant list of unique cards at
