About Birth Doulas….
The word doula has its origins in Greece and means “woman’s servant.” In this day and age, doulas are known to be professionals trained to provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and just after childbirth. Woman to woman labor support is an age old tradition that has gained renewed appreciation and recognition in present day maternity care. Doulas have a deep understanding of birth as well as trust in a woman’s ability to find her way through the process of birth.

Prenatal meetings allow us to get to know one another and provide an opportunity for me to learn about specific concerns and hopes you have for the birth. Any necessary supplementary childbirth education is included in these prenatal meetings. Discussion about preparing for the early postpartum is also included.
Support during the birth involves continuous emotional, informational, and physical support during the process (including labor support in your home).
Postpartum follow up visits include “mother care”, as well as allow an opportunity for reflecting on the birth and for information and support on: breastfeeding, infant care/soothing, postpartum transition, baby wearing and postpartum community resources.
Having worked both as a Doula with families birthing in the hospital and as a Midwife’s Assistant for home and birthing center births, I bring a well rounded and experienced approach to my clients, offering many tools for working with the pain and intensity of labor and birth.
As a doula, I honor each woman’s choices for pregnancy, birthing, and parenting. And, I hold a deep recognition that each woman comes to this experience with a unique life history, as well as individual expectations, fears, and desires in relation to this very special time of her life. Part of my role as a Doula is to help women recognize of what might serve them best in labor and to help foster a mindset which will allow them to embrace the unknown elements of birth and early parenting as well as any unexpected twists and turns which may be part of this journey.
I work in a doula partnership with Megan Bunch and Sabine Omvik. Collectively we are the “Santa Cruz Birth Companions”. Our partnership allows you to have access to the collective wisdom of the “team” through our Monthly Meet Ups with our clients. Additionally, you have the opportunity to get to know your back up doulas in the rare event that back up is needed.
